2011 A ClassNorth Americans

After a very successful race season here in the Midwest we were anxious to see how things would go at the North American Championship held at Islamarado, FL. It was unfortunate the weather didn't cooperate. Five days of racing was scheduled and only one day counted. Ian was hoping for a couple of good practice days too, since he hadn't been tested at home. The one day did get some of our questions answered. Ian felt he had the best boat speed upwind and was making adjustments to improve his downwind finishes. That showed in the results of the day. Bottom line is that we are very pleased with the platform. Richard Roake got the hull design down and it appeared to be the stiffest platform on the course. Henry Bossett built a fantastic sail with lots of power. Having built these A Cats for 35 years I have to say this is the best looking one to come out of our shop. The next step will be to add curved boards and possibly play with the "new" mast/sail combination.

NORTH CAPE REGATTA - JUNE 25-26 1011

The LR4 showed up big at this regatta held on the western shore of lake Erie. 8 A CATS showed up and the conditions were perfect for testing the new boat. Winds started at 20k on Saturday morning and decreased to 10k
by the end of four races. On Sunday they started in 4k and after 3 races it had increased to 8-9k. Seven races sailed and seven firsts gives us a big smile, especially since most of those wins were minutes ahead of the next boat, The platform is very stable and really accelerates when you get a hull up. Pitching moment is the least of any of the boats there (EVO, A3, Flyer, LR2), No nose down on the downhill ride and Ian says he isn't really pushing it yet. The new North sail from Henry Bossett is nice and full and gives the boat a big punch going downwind. The top twists off very nicely for the climb uphill. And the sailor is doing a great job getting used to the boat. I put a couple of short videos at LR4 North Cape.

Race results from three regattas have given us a lot of confidence in this new design. Ian says he has no concerns of the boat tripping over itself, even in 20 knots. Our observations show a very pitch resistant ride with the least wave off the hull I've ever seen. The Bossett sail is full with a nice firm leech that twists off when you want it to in breeze..
